Tim Shutt served as crew chief for Mike McLaughlin last season and led him to a seventh-place finish in the points standing. The pair found Victory Lane at Talladega in the spring. A strong spiritual base coupled with a tireless work ethic make Shutt a perfect fit at Joe Gibbs Racing.
Shutt was born March 20, 1969, and grew up in Harrisburg, Pa. His first exposure to racing came at the age of seven when his father purchased a go-kart for Tim's brother. His brother ran the go-kart a few times but did not enjoy racing, opening the door for Tim to become addicted to the sport. "The first time I drove, I was pretty much hooked on it," Shutt said.
In 1991, Shutt joined driver Bobby Allen as the mechanic for Allen's World of Outlaws sprint car.
He spent the next five years in Indiana working on and occasionally driving USAC midget and sprint cars. It was during this time that he became friends with Tony Stewart. That relationship would lead him to Joe Gibbs shortly after Stewart was signed as a hot prospect by Gibbs.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series was the next stop for Tim. In 1996, he joined driver Randy Tolsma's team and spent three years with him. Then, when Gibbs expanded his Busch racing operation in 1999, Shutt was hired with a strong recommendation from Stewart.
